What have we achieved so far?

This section is our barometer. Where we review our results and calculate the effectiveness of our actions. We aren’t interested in things that add, we want to do things that MULTIPLY.

Carrefour’s commitment

There were several campaigns, quite a few videos that uncovered their practices and over 85,000 signatures (which we took to their headquarters). After all that, Carrefour had no choice but to commit to meeting minimum values of welfare both for broiler chickens and laying hens.

Eroski and food security

We held many talks with Eroski. At first, they didn’t make it easy for us, but in the end, they were quite clear. They didn’t want us to go into action, so they decided to commit to ensuring their own brand products meet European Chicken Commitment conditions before 2026.

Alcampo succumbed to our charms

Alcampo’s commitment was also reached after lengthy discussions. We were beginning to think that they just liked talking to our team. But in the end, they made commitments for laying hens and broiler chickens. The end of a short, but intense, story.

Avramar, the largest fish producer in the Mediterranean, commits

We encouraged them (yes, us: AWO) to develop an implementation plan for stunning fish in all their farms in Spain and Greece. More than 70,000 tons annually, which is equivalent to almost a hundred million fish, will no longer experience an agonizing death in ice baths. In other words, a great many fish will suffer much less.

Progress in animal welfare thanks to our initiatives

Want to know what changes we’ve already generated in the food system? From the banning of horrible practices in the industry to creating public awareness. Each step forward brings us closer to a sustainable planet, free from intensive animal farming.

Large businesses say that all their products comply with animal welfare. But do they really? We won’t be fooled by a label. That’s why we verify that they honor their commitments.

Progress in laying hen welfare

Over 80% of Spanish large-scale retail distribution chains have banned the sale of caged laying hen’s eggs thanks to the Animal Welfare Observatory. We’ve been on their case for many years, and we’re getting things done!

Progress in broiler chicken welfare

We’ve already convinced many retail outlets to ban some of the cruelest practices involving these animals. We don’t want to see any more broilers!

Progress in aquaculture welfare

We have achieved the Animal Welfare Guide in Spanish aquaculture, the fourth to be presented in the world. What will we do with this? For now, we have managed to convince the aquaculture sector itself to discourage the slaughter of fish without prior stunning.

Spanish Royal Decree on video monitoring in slaughterhouses

We put our minds to it, and we did it. This was our first project, and it made Spain the first country in the European Union to have video monitoring cameras in slaughterhouses. A small step for humankind, a giant leap for animals.
