Broiler chicken welfare

Broiler chickens also have their own revolution underway at the Animal Welfare Observatory. We’ve launched a campaign to transform the way broiler chickens, a breed genetically created to grow unnaturally (completely artificially) fast.

Our way of revolutionizing the poultry farming sector

We are leading change and fostering a revolution in the way broilers are bred and treated. We want to ban the cruelest practices in this sector. Did you know that from the age of 20 days these animals can’t even support their own body weight because of their disproportionate growth? Unable to move around, they lie on the ground in intensive farming units. That’s why they are crammed full of antibiotics, so they can last as long as possible under those conditions.

Our way of doing it? Basically, we talk to all parties involved in broiler chicken production (from factory farms to supermarkets and other distribution companies) to reach real agreements. If they don’t listen to us, it’s time to rock and roll. A little sneak peek: more than one company has found a truck parked in front of their headquarters with images of what they do.

Lidl’s million-euro turnover stained with animal suffering

Lidl is the supermarket chain with the highest turnover in all of Europe. Precisely because of this, it is the brand that could change the paradigm for animals. But no, it has decided to perpetuate animal suffering.

Sign to make Lidl stop these practices.

The European Chicken Commitment: the minimum acceptable standard

The European Chicken Commitment is more than a list of minimum requirements for chicken welfare. It is the opportunity for the poultry farming sector to get their act together and step up to the demands of a constantly evolving market that is increasingly aware of the cruel conditions broiler chickens are subjected to.

Want to know the measures included in the commitment? Some examples are basic, like improving air quality and good lighting. Ah, and let’s not forget a change of pace: a change from fast-growing breeds that live in suffering to breeds of chicken that grow at a natural, slower rate.

“If a human baby grew at the same speed as these birds, it would weigh 300 kg after its first two months of life.”
