In AWO we are an organization that challenges the regulations of today’s food industry to make it healthy, sustainable and free of animal suffering. And we’re warning you: we are VERY persistent.

Let's put an end to the f***ing cages

The objective? Eliminate the tiny spaces and deplorable conditions in which THOUSANDS of animals live.

Let's empty all the cages in the food system.

Signing is showing companies that we demand minimum standards of decency. We repeat: minimum. Because the cages should have disappeared years ago.

Lidl’s million-euro turnover stained with animal suffering

Lidl is the supermarket chain with the highest turnover in all of Europe. Precisely because of this, it is the brand that could change the paradigm for animals. But instead it has decided to perpetuate animal suffering.

Avramar, the largest fish producer in the Mediterranean, commits

We encouraged them (yes, us: AWO) to develop an implementation plan for stunning fish in all their farms in Spain and Greece. More than 70,000 tons annually, which is equivalent to almost a hundred million fish, will no longer experience an agonizing death in ice baths. In other words, a great many fish will suffer much less.

Victories for animals

We made a big change to generate a big change

We started this journey as Equalia, two people with new ideas, limited resources and a heartfelt desire to change the lives of millions of animals. Over our years of experience, we’ve grown in number, but we’ve also become more effective at achieving results. So, there was no avoiding it: we moved out of our comfort zone and took the red pill. We’ve changed to revolutionize animal welfare.

In AWO we make change happen (really)

We're up for challenges. That's why we've set out to end the suffering of farmed animals. And we're not settling for just anything. We want real commitments from companies and institutions. And we want society to demand them too.

We pursue a food system free of conflict where intensive animal farming and all the suffering that this production system entails are only a distant memory. We demonstrate to different entities that animal welfare is the key to a sustainable, healthy food system free from animal suffering that, as a society, we will no longer tolerate.

About us

How do we do it?

If there’s one thing that characterizes our work at the Animal Welfare Observatory it’s that all our work is based on data. Our actions are backed up by rigorous research, impressive numbers and an extra helping of perseverance. Get ready to discover how we get our great results!

What we do
Animal Welfare Observatory
We publish investigations

We uncover what goes unseen and reveal everything that happens behind the closed doors of factory farms and slaughterhouses. The investigations we publish are the secret weapon, revealing the truth about animals. Sometimes we use hidden cameras, other times we get the information from whistle-blowers, but our favorite source will always be leaks.

Animal Welfare Observatory
We change the law

We work tirelessly to influence institutions and promote policies that protect and improve animal welfare. With a combination of solid arguments and a little smooth talking, we remind them that animals deserve to be treated with respect and that we are not willing to accept excuses or obsolete methods.

Animal Welfare Observatory
We work with businesses

Want to know how we convince businesses to ban some of the cruelest practices in their supply chains? Our specialty is negotiation: we love setting out the scientific evidence that links animal welfare with a healthy, sustainable food industry. And if that doesn’t work… well, it's better that it does.

“There is a conflict between a producer’s profits and the best interests of animals.”

Peter Singer
Professor of Law and Philosophy

Want to be part of our revolution ?

We could tell you that donating is the most obvious option, but that would be too direct. So instead, we’re giving you the opportunity to have a lifelong romance with animal welfare… by becoming a member!

No, we aren’t asking you to donate a tropical island (although we wouldn’t say no) but by joining in effective advocacy you’ll help us to continue the fight for a food system free of intensive animal farming.

If you want to change the rules of the game and generate a real impact in the lives of millions of animals, join the Animal Welfare Observatory. We can’t promise you fame or fortune, but we can promise that every cent or penny you donate will be used effectively to make a substantial difference in the lives of millions of animals.
