For more than a year, we have publicized the conditions of the chickens sold at Lidl, which reflect Lidl's disinterest in adapting to minimum animal welfare standards. The first step towards animal welfare: ask Lidl to sign the European Chicken Commitment.

Investigative reports

For as long as images like these exist, here at the Animal Welfare Observatory we will continue uncovering the practices behind Lidl products.

The chain of supermarkets with the HIGHEST TURNOVER in the whole of Europe, the brand that could change the paradigm for animals, has chosen to perpetuate animal suffering. Lidl could make a difference, but it prefers to continue making millions of euros stained with the pain and anguish of animals.

Committed businesses

A constantly increasing number of businesses have committed to implementing the improvements proposed by the ECC before 2026:

Carrefour · Eroski · Alcampo · Aldi · El Corte Inglés · E.Leclerc · Supermercados BM

Discover the four worst practices in chicken rearing that we find in supermarkets like Lidl

  • High density of chickens
Science tells us that a disproportionate density implies a higher risk of virulent outbreaks with potential transmission to humans.

  • Rearing of fast-growing breeds
Fast growth causes “production diseases” such as ascites, sudden death syndrome or contact dermatitis.

  • Non-compliance with minimum standards of behavioral enrichment
The lack of stimulation in their environment prevents the development of natural behavior patterns like walking, running or foraging.

  • Electrical water bath stunning
Birds are submerged in an electrified water bath as a method of stunning before slaughter. The European Commission indicates that the prohibition of this process is necessary due to the animal suffering it entails.

The European Chicken Commitment

Animal welfare is an integral part of food system sustainability. The conditions of these animals reflect the lack of interest of supermarkets like Lidl in adapting to the minimum requirements in animal welfare established in the European Chicken Commitment.
